Many farmers who grow things we take for granted – such as tea, coffee, cocoa and cotton – live in poverty. Fair trade is an international movement working to ensure that producers in low income countries get a fair deal:
- A minimum price agreed with producers
- An extra sum of money (a social premium) for community projects such as healthcare or schools
- Greater respect for the environment
- Safe and fair working conditions
- A co-operative or workers’ committee in which women take an active role
